A 56yo alcoholic man who has increased the amount of alcohol he is using wants to attend his daughter’s wedding that is in 2wks. He is now coming to you for help. How would you help him?

a. Acamprosate
b. Refer to clinical psychologist
c. Refer to GP
d. Despiramine
e. Refer to community mental health support group

answer: C

Acamprosate is used AFTER alcohol withdrawal has been completed to maintain abstinence, it does not prevent withdrawal symptoms. This man is still consuming alcohol (in fact increasing his consumption), he will need to be guided through withdrawal and prescribed with medications to reduce his symptoms e.g. diazepam. This can only be done (from the options given) by his GP. Psychologists do not prescribe medications and support groups are for emotional support.
